Ilderim’s Harem, named after Ilderim, the head Sheik in the ritual, and informally known as “the Harem” was formed in 1977 by Past Queen Freda Wirth and Past Supreme Queen Nancelyn Ross.
The Harem performs once or twice a year as well as at the Supreme Queen’s Official Visit. The Unit, which provides visual, rhythmic and artistic performances, has also performed at Installations, Supreme Sessions and other special events. The Harem usually has one fundraiser a year that provides funds for costumes, paraphernalia and music. Most recently, the Harem’s fundraisers have taken the form of a Quiz Night. A portion of the proceeds is donated to the Supreme Temple Convalescent Endowment Fund at the Supreme Queen’s Official Visit. The Unit also participates in the annual general fundraiser, the Special Project, held by Sphinx Temple. The performances may be pageantries, which are interpretive movements, slow or fast dances and humorous routines such as: Sister Act, Spice Girls, Puttin’ on the Ritz, and Tan Shoes and Pink Shoelaces.
Sphinx Temple Patrol
Sphinx Temple Patrol was formed in 1960 and the first Unit to be formed in our Temple. The first Supreme performance and the first performance of a Unit from Sphinx Temple was in 1961 for Queen Freda Wirth in Denver. The Patrol’s duties include escorting the Officers into the Temple at the opening of the Temple and presenting the Flags of Canada and the United States. Each year the Unit has two fundraisers which include selling Grey Cup Lottery Tickets in the fall and a Bridge and Dessert Party in April. The Patrol performs several times at Session and during the Official Visit of the Supreme Queen.
Choir
The Sphinx Temple Choir was formed in 1981 with Past Queen Audrey Hill as the appointed Director. The Choir sings the Banner Song at the opening of each Session, the songs designated in the ritual to sing at Ceremonials and performs when requested by the Queen. Each Christmas Season we invite the Ladies of the Household to join us in carolling to our shut-ins and then join us for refreshments Our fundraisers vary from year to year with the profits assisting in purchasing outfits and donations to the Convalescent Relief Fund. Our practices are held on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of the month at 1:00 p.m. at Masonic Memorial Centre, 420 Corydon Ave. Additional practices may be held as needed. Music selections are varied and include show tunes, folk melodies, popular songs, gospel and religious material.
Klassie Klowns
This youngest Unit of Sphinx Temple was formed in February 2003.
The objective of the Unit is to provide smiles and fun while performing at the request of the Queen, and to promote goodwill on behalf of the Daughters of the Nile. The Unit performs a skit at one or more Sessions during the year. The Klowns also entertain other groups and at children’s events as requested with approval from the Temple. The Klowns have work parties to make pre-op dolls for the Shriners Hospital for Children® - Canada in Montreal. Each year the Klassie Klowns hold a successful Spring Plant sale fundraiser. The Unit does balloon making, face-painting, and performs skits to entertain children of all ages.
